In many societies, marriage is considered as one of the most important tasks for a healthy social life. I don’t know what you people see and face.

When a girl/boy is grown up, the first things people in the society want to know are, what they do and when they are getting married.

Anyway, going by what I have seen and heard, I composed a poem, here it goes…

“ज़्यादा उम्र हो जाएगी तो कौन करेगा तुझसे शादी?”

कहता है समाज “ना कर जिंदगी की ऐसी बर्बादी।”

पर मैं तो हूंँ मन-मौजी, चाहूंँ अपनी आज़ादी।

न घरेलू, न घुमक्कड़, न बातूनी, परे कई आदतों से,

मैं तो हूंँ लड़की निश्छल, परिपूर्ण जीवन के भावों से,

सपने मेरे सबसे ऊपर, कहीं दूर रीति-रिवाजों से।

न है मतलब मुझे जग की कुंठित मानसिकताओं से,

न है खुद के मन में हलचल बीती हुई पीड़ाओं से,

अपने मन में झाँक लिया, निर्मल आप भावनाओं से।

फिर भी जग मांँगे मुझसे कीमत, “दे दे अपनी आज़ादी”,

“नहीं मिलेगा मौका फिर, कर ले अब तो तू शादी”,

कहता है समाज, “ना कर जिंदगी की ऐसी बर्बादी।”

“Who will marry you when you are old?”

Says society, “Do not waste your life.”

But I am self-willed, I want my freedom.

 

Neither I am domestic, nor stroller, nor talkative, I am beyond habits.

I am a girl, with feelings of life,

For me, dreams are vital, I am far away from customs.

 

Neither does it mean I am frustrated,

Nor I dwell in the past,

I am aware of my thoughts, possess pure feelings.

 

Still I am asked for a price, “Give up your freedom”,

“You will not get a chance again, get married”,

Says society, “Do not waste your life.”
